Camp Barnard is a 251 acre Scout Camp suitable for day-use and short or long-term camps. It offers sites and facilities for both residential and wilderness camping. This picture was created by T’Sou-ke Nation artist Mark Gauti and represents the ancient bond between eagle and dogsalmon. The bond between these two species also represents the cycle of life within the ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest where traditional First Nations stories tell the importance of the role and connection that each species has within nature.

We are very grateful to Mark for his generosity in letting us use this beautiful image. It is a most appropriate one to represent 2009 as one of our major projects this year is to build a bridge to protect trout and salmon spawning habitat on MacKenzie Creek in the backcountry. Protection of this stream is critically important in the conservation and rebuilding of vulnerable stocks of the lower West Coast Vancouver Island. Streams and wetlands at Camp Barnard provide habitat for many species!

Getting there: (1 hour drive from downtown Victoria)

From Victoria take Hwy 1 and follow signs to Sooke
In Sooke turn right at the 3rd stop light on to Otter Point Road
Stay on Otter Pt. Rd. for about 5 Km, turn right on to Young Lake Road
Young Lk. Rd. leads right into Camp Barnard

What you'll see ...

Young Lake:

Our 14-acre lake features a swimming area, boat house with canoe rentals, lakeside camping and an around-the-lake trail.
Young Lake is big enough for a good paddle, small enough for a really great Beaver hiking adventure. Life just doesn't get much better.

Cabin Circles:

Each of the four circles ( Rama, Mang, Kaa and Sona*) has six cabins (8 bunks each). Cabins are insulated, have covered porches and have excellent venting. At least one cabin in each circle is wheelchair accessible.

Each includes a fire circle, kitchen/dining facilities and are convenient to restrooms. The two kitchens, Mor* (shared by Rama and Mang), and Keego* (shared by Kaa and Sona) each accommodate two cooking crews (sorry cooks not included in this offer).

*All names are from the Jungle Book.

McPherson and Totem Lodges:

These two buildings, joined by a covered walkway, are usually booked together. Their location at the highest point in the camp offers a quiet setting and excellent star gazing.

McPherson (on the left) contains the kitchen and dining areas, with the dining room doubling as meeting/activity area. Totem has a divided sleeping loft and a large activity room on the first floor. Bathrooms are available in both buildings; playing field; and fire circle.

Tenting and Tarping Areas:

Camp Barnard has a wide range of sites suitable for tenting and tarping. Some locations have washrooms and showers; others are limited to pit toilets. All have access to (inspected) coldwater standpipes.

About using Camp Barnard

CAMP SAFETY GUIDE

All Users are required to report to the Camp Caretaker for check-in & check-out.
Camp emergencies must be reported to the Camp Caretaker.
Camp Barnard is in a 911-service area. A payphone is situated near the camp entrance.
Fire exits must not be blocked.
The discretion of the Camp Caretaker shall prevail in all matters of conduct and safety.
DO NOT drive vehicles "Off Road" in Camp. Park in parking lot only.
All vehicles should be left locked & items of value stored out of sight.
Alcoholic beverages are not permitted by any user groups at Camp Barnard. (please refer to the Duty of Care Document ).
The use of firearms, including air rifles and handguns is not permitted at any time on camp property.
Absolutely NO PETS are permitted in any area at Camp.
Smoking is permitted only in designated smoking areas.
Persons under the age of 19 will not be permitted to smoke anywhere in camp.
Please ensure you are familiar with the National Duty of Care Document regarding smoking in the presence of youth.

CAMP MAINTENANCE GUIDE

Trees, shrubs, creeks or the lake should never be used as a toilet.
To preserve undergrowth, walk on trails and park in parking lots.
All campers are asked to observe quiet time after 11 pm.
Fires must be in designated fire pit areas only. Do not leave fires burning unattended; ensure they are fully extinguished after use.
Firewood will be provided subject to availability. Do Not cut or burn deadfall or trees.
All equipment and furniture is to be returned to its correct location.
Camp courtesy is to request entry to others site.

PROGRAM SUPPORT EQUIPMENT

Canoes, PFDs are available to rent for members of Scouting and Guiding. Book with Camp Registrar or Camp Caretaker.
A Frisbee Golf Course is located in the backcountry. Frisbees are available from the caretaker.
There are 3 geo-caching sights at Camp Barnard.
An archery range with butts and netting is located along the road to the Backcountry. ALL USERS must reserve range with Registrar or at the camp office. Shooting equipment is available for rent to Scouts and Guides only. Other campers may bring their own archery equipment (no compound bows).
